Special Olympics Seeks Help

28 February 2011

Collection Day is the single biggest fundraising initiative in Special Olympics Ireland's calendar. This year's collection will take place on Friday 15th April in every town and city in Ireland. It's a simple on-street bucket collection that runs from first thing in the morning until 6 or 7 the evening. The charity is seeking to augment their effort on the day by placing collection boxes or buckets in suitable locations throughout the region and is asking if any hotels would take a box for a week or two in the run-up to Collection Day.

Also, to ensure Collection Day is as successful - and profitable - as possible, they need to engage as many volunteers as possible to give a few hours on the day. As well as volunteers from Special Olympics Clubs, they are recruiting from schools, sports clubs, businesses and other organisations. Once on board, all volunteers will liaise with an appointed Co-ordinator, agreeing a suitable location and time slot. All they need to do beyond that is turn up on the day, throw on a bib, grab a bucket and bring in as much money as possible!

Volunteers who have previously taken part in the collection have had lots of fun on the day. They go home in the evening knowing they've made a real difference for an excellent cause. The 2011 Special Olympics World Summer Games will take place in Athens, Greece in June and July. 126 athletes from across the country make up Team Ireland, with 30 from Ulster. Money raised on Collection Day will go towards sending the team to Athens, as well as ensuring the other 11,000 athletes continue to receive training on a professional level in their own community.
