A consultation on proposed changes to the law regulating the sale and supply of alcohol in Northern Ireland took place in 2012. Following careful consideration of the report, Minister McCausland has made a decision on the proposals to be taken forward. They will be included in a Bill which will be taken through the legislative process in the Northern Ireland Assembly.

The Federation made a submission to the original consultation with particular emphasis on clarifying the law in relation to young people attending hotel functions.

The Minister is now proposing to allow young people to attend functions in licensed areas of hotels as long as the bar remains closed. He is also planning to remove the need to apply for a Children's Certificate, although the same restrictions will still apply.

The Federation welcomes these changes, which will make it much easier for hotels to host school and sports club events where alcohol is not being served. There is still no clarification in relation to weddings and other family events where children may be present after 9.00 pm but the Federation continues to work with the PSNI to ensure a sensible approach is taken.
