We are updating this story as things progress.

There are now 10 Northern Ireland MPs signed up to the Early Day Motion - the ones we still need are Gregory Campbell, DUP; Lady Sylvia Hermon, Ind; and David Simpson, DUP. If you know any of these three MPs, please ask them to support our campaign.

The EDM now has 58 signatures out of the 50 that are needed. A total of 60 MPs from across all parties have indicated their support and the Sun newspaper has also come on board as a supporter. See the article below for more information.

Original Story below:

As you may be aware we work with the CutTourismVAT campaign to raise the issue of VAT in Westminster. A real champion of this is Margaret Ritchie who has lodged an Early Day Motion (EDM) on the subject. The idea is that an issue is put forward by an MP and then once it reaches 50 signatures it is debated. It is a very powerful tool in getting issues to the fore and influencing policy.

The motion is as follows: That this House recognises the value of the tourism sector; notes that tourism-related businesses lie at the heart of the local community and economy; further notes that 24 out of 27 EU states, including the Republic of Ireland, take advantage of a reduced rate of VAT for some part of their tourism sector, and that this has made a positive impact by increasing investment and jobs; acknowledges that, as a result, local regions that have a high reliance on the tourism sector are at a competitive disadvantage compared to other EU states; highlights the economic study produced by Professor Adam Blake, using the Treasury's own modelling technique, which showed that a cut in tourism VAT could increase gross domestic product by up to £4 billion per year; calls on the Chancellor of the Exchequer to introduce a sector-specific VAT reduction for certain tourism-related products, including accommodation and attractions; and further recognises that such a move would strengthen the wider economy, support job creation and generate investment in local businesses.

It is great to see that 8 local MPs have already signed the motion and that there are currently 31 signatures. In addition to being raised by Margaret Richie the motion is sponsored by Mark Durkan (SDLP) and Jim Shannon (DUP).

We will send a note to all other MP’s encouraging them to sign the motion which has support from the all the main parties at Westminster. However, we need you to contact your MP to ask them to sign the EDM. To help you the Cut TourismVAT Campaign has provided a draft email you could send (see attachment) - but please feel free to amend this as you see fit. This is a great opportunity as we know they are already 50 MPs out there who support the Campaign and should want to sign. The more MPs who sign the greater the weight and impact this will have on the key decision makers. If you are unsure of who your MP is you can find out by using the following site: Alternatively if you require any further information please contact the office.
